  The apostle Paul was giving some wise and insightful advise to Timothy, a young pastor whom he was mentoring…writing these words in his second letter to him:  "Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people.” He continues on… “Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap.   Shortly after completing His ‘time of testing’ in the wilderness where He confronted Satan, we are told Jesus returned ‘in the power of the Spirit’ (Luke 4:14) and began teaching in various synagogues. He then returned to Nazareth where He had grown up, and as was His custom, He went to the synagogue there on the Sabbath day and used a reading from the scrolls of Isaiah to make a rather bold announcement. This is when Jesus announced to the world (for the most part) that God’s Spirit was upon Him and that He had been 'anointed to proclaim liberty to the captives…and to set at liberty those who were oppressed’, among other things (Luke 4:18).   Have you ever found yourself taken back and at a loss for words when you heard someone say something, or maybe witnessed their questionable actions…and asked yourself: “What in the hell were they thinking?” Truth be told, not only have I thought/asked myself that very question when seeing what others might have done or said, but I’ve even asked that of myself …in times past (‘What was I thinking?’).   I hope we are all on the same page of understanding when it comes to this word ‘incentivize’. Whether you do this with your children, your employees, or your dog… we like to encourage folks to make good positive and productive decisions by ‘rewarding’ them with favor, which can come in many forms. Now you may disagree with me here, but I don’t believe this is a ‘bad’ thing to do with people, children (or pets).
