God is not an American.

I know...hard to believe and some might even take offense to that.

Something else we might want to consider is the fact when God sent His Son Jesus into the world, He did not do so with the intent of ‘Making Israel Great Again’.

Jesus came to save a people lost in darkness and bound by sin, and His message was clear: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matt.4:17). And He was very open about the fact that “His kingdom was not of this world.” (John 18:36)

In order to see ... and enter His kingdom, a spiritual rebirth would need to take place. (John 3:3-7). Paul would later point out that those who continue to practice the “evident deeds of the flesh” nature would NOT inherit this kingdom. (Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:5; 1 Cor. 6:9-10)

Yes, as believers, we are instructed to pray for all men, for those who are in authority so that we may lead a ‘quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” (1 Tim. 2:1-2) But we are also cautioned about becoming ‘entangled with the affairs and the cares of this life/world’ as well. (2 Tim. 2:3-4; Mark 4:19) Oh, and that part about ‘honoring the king’ applies to kings from either political party; but it doesn’t mean you have to agree with them all the time. (1 Pet. 2:17)

You want to vote? – fine...vote; carry out your civic duties. Jesus even encouraged us to pay our taxes as we ‘render unto Caesar what is his’. (Mark 12:17). Be a ‘good citizen’, but let’s not forget that a true follower knows his ‘citizenship is in heaven’ (Phil. 3:20) which is why we are exhorted to ‘set our minds on things above and not of this world’. (Col. 3:2)

Peter warns us to be mindful of how we ‘conduct ourselves throughout the time of our stay here...in fear’. (1 Pet. 1:14-17). When you vacation and visit other cities, how ‘involved’ do you become with the local politics during the ‘time of your stay there’?

We are just passing through...

All that to say: Beware of confusing God’s kingdom by getting swept up in the ‘feel good emotions called patriotism’ while wrapping yourself up in the symbol of a flag. The only symbol that should cover us believers is the symbol of the cross.

One last word to the wise: before you start singing 'Happy Days are Here Again'  if/when 'your guy' wins an election, beware that you are not lulled in to a false sense of security that all will be well.  "For when they say, 'Peace and safety!', then sudden destruction comes upon them; as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape." (1 Thess. 5:3)
